Why Are Steed Scooters/Trikes Road Legal?
Steed vehicles are road legal when used correctly. For our standard models, supplied as type-approved L1e electric mopeds, the correct licence is an AM licence with CBT, or a UK car licence issued before February 2001. Riders must be at least 16, wear an approved motorcycle helmet, and the vehicle must be DVLA-registered (V5C), display a number plate, be insured, and (once 3 years old from date of purchase) hold an MOT. We confirm the exact requirements per model in the order documentation.
A lot of the misunderstanding comes from standard electric scooters sold in the UK. Many of these are not legal for public road use, which leads some people to assume that all electric scooters fall under the same rules.
Steed vehicles are different. They are built and supplied to meet the requirements for electric mopeds, not private-use e-scooters. That means they are designed for road use when properly registered and insured.
So why are we still advertising them as Electric Scooters/Electric Tricycles on our listing?
Simple. It makes it easier to distinguish between which of these is the two-wheeled (scooter) from the three-wheeled (tricycle). Calling them two-wheeled/three-wheeled e-mopeds is just a mouthful and doesn’t have the same ring to it. And we're not under-selling them either as they are still scooters and tricycles by design, just more powerful and built to meet electric moped requirements. They're sold as scooters and tricycles for ease of recognition, calling them two- or three-wheeled e-mopeds is a mouthful, but legally they are type-approved electric mopeds (L1e) supplied with a Certificate of Conformity, which is why they can be DVLA-registered and ridden on UK roads.
So you don't need to worry about your Steed vehicle being deemed illegal or seized. As long as it is properly registered, insured, taxed, and ridden by someone with the correct licence and a helmet, you are legally allowed to ride it on public roads
While a few comments online may suggest otherwise, hundreds of our customers are already riding their Steed vehicles on UK roads today without issue.
